National Road Magazine's Friday Photo Blog returns with a lengthy collection by frequent contributor Tim McLaughlin. Once again, McLaughlin demonstrates his adept eye for the stage profiling some of the amazing talent which plays in the Hoosier state's capital city.

[dropcap]O[/dropcap]n Saturday October 22, 2016, the DoItIndy Radio Hour celebrated its third year on the air with its biggest party yet. Like their previous annual shows, they include visual artists, too.
The show, which has been hosted by MP Cavalier and Scott Tolin since day one, celebrated what began as a small chaotic event, but today has become a diamond in the rough.
Their celebration was held, where the vast majority of the shows have been held, the Grove Haus in Fountain Square neighborhood on the near-south side of Indianapolis. The show’s hosts will tell you Grove Haus and the owners Mark Ortwein and Carrie Bone-Ortwein might be the third and fourth hosts.
The show has always been known as DoItIndy Radio, but in the beginning it was under WOOT.
The first show was supposed to be held in a studio, but due to unforeseen reasons, it took place in the “producer’s” grandmother’s backyard in Irvington (I listened to it). The show continued under WOOT until conflicts and creative differences between the hosts and the original producer caused a split, and the show found a new home with RFI.FM.
I first met MP Cavalier (I only know him by this name but I hear his real name is Greg) while we were both living in Irvington. I was promoting the second annual Irvington’s Own Music event at the Irving Theater, and he called me to interview me for their online show. We talked about our love for local music and became instant friends. I first met Scott Tolin, also an Irvington resident, under odd circumstances. I was at my first Oranje event when it was held on 22nd and Capital, and if you have never been to Oranje, it is a festival of the mind. Anyway, I was watching one of Neon Love Life’s last shows and another great band that moved to Nashville called Ranger. He and his friend Ben were there and Scott planted himself and his camera right in my way. I’ve since told him that story, although he doesn’t seem to remember it the same way I do. What I am saying is these two guys LOVE music.
The show is as much about the local music community as much as it is about the local community. They promote music and music events, but it is not uncommon for the ultimate benefit to be charity. One example of this is their promoting and Grove Haus’ hosting of Women of Indianapolis Artists. An event celebrating women artist and featured their art be it music, art, and dance. Rock it to a Cure and Tonic Ball are a couple of others that raise money to benefit organizations in the Indianapolis area.
The show invites people to come and hang out at Grove Haus with the show’s hosts and listen to at least one if not two performers play three or four songs. After their set the band will sit down with the hosts and discuss their story and promote themselves. It’s like Austin City Limits meets Noisey. It is not uncommon for the play list to include songs from bands outside of Indianapolis, but it often is because artists are playing a show in the city. See, that is that beauty of these guys. Let me put it to you this way: Have you ever talked about going to a show with a friend and decided to go later because you don’t know any songs by the visiting band? Well, now you know a song or two.
The show has had several guest hosts, and I was honored to a host on a few occasions. MP and Scott also had me on the show to talk about a photo book I self-published profiling a year in review of the Indianapolis music scene for 2015.
DoItIndy Radio Hour has logged 138 episodes and has released a compilation CD each year. When the third one was released it brought the total to 74 songs, with two additional tunes released later. These recordings are available at Band Camp, and this year donations for these recordings will go to Safe Families for Children of Madison County.
