At a glance Cole Woodruff is quintessentially small town Hoosier. The open, plaid button-down shirt; the worn infantry cap with the frayed edges on the bill; the wispy scraggles of a five, six, and seven ‘o clock shadow; the friendly head-nod/shoulder-shrug combination. This is more than an image. A Frankfort native living north of Indy—and working in a nursing home by day—Woodruff is fully immersed in the Midwestern experience, and those themes echo in his music. His centerpiece, “Family Man,” resounds powerfully, a haunting tribute to a mother he lost in his youth. Listen to him work his guitar, and you’ll hear the plodding rhythms of the average, American life. We get up, we go to work, we dream, we love. We also occasionally take those moments…the ones where we let all our burdens fall off our shoulders, look above us, and marvel that we have found ourselves here. All of this Woodruff understands.
